Moisture: Feeding your Natural Hair

As a natural coily-n-curly girl I get asked all the time, “How can I keep my natural hair moisturized?” The answer is an easy one to those who are willing to listen and follow the directives I am about to give.

Our natural coils need water. Water is to natural hair as air is to life. We need it! If you are natural and your hair regimen goes without water for long periods of time, you can expect breakage. Dry, thirsty, dehydrated hair breaks off! I recommend keeping a spray bottle of water handy to manipulate the hair in between transitioning to another style. I’ve learned that most women tend to give up on remaining natural because they try to style their natural hair why it’s dry and don’t find it easy to comb through or detangle. The hassle and lack of education can cause anyone to want to throw in the towel, but don’t just yet! You can do it! A light mist of water with a light oil such as coconut oil can be a blessing to you when you are trying to pull those 2-3 day old twist-outs into a cute pony puff. Trust me here ladies! I’m able to go through different styling techniques when my hair is slightly damp and lightly oiled.

An additive to retaining moisture is the use of  butters & leave-in conditioners. Yep and when I say conditioners, I mean the kind that you put in and don’t have to rinse out.
My all time favorite is the Giovanni Direct Leave-In Weightless Moisture.  This is a definite jewel amongst those of us who are naturals.

When I had first heard of this product on YouTube I searched a few Walmarts and Targets in the city. They had all the other Giovanni products except the Direct Leave-In. That told me two things, that either they didn’t sell it or folks were buying it up! One day, I was in a health food grocery store and I saw the Giovanni products on the bottom shelf, I scanned the line-up not expecting them to have it either and waalah! Giovanni Direct Leave-In was staring back at me. I grabbed the bottle, looked to the left and then to the right and bolted to the cash register line. I had finally found what I was looking for months prior. I was so happy to  because I was going to order it on eBay or Amazon, now I didn’t have to!
The product retailed for $6.99…  that’s not bad in my book considering what it does for my hair!

Here are the ingredients:

Aqua (purified water) with *rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) oil, *nettle (Uritica dioica) oil, *thyme (Thymus vulagris) oil, birch leaf (Butela alba) oil, *chamomile (Anthemis nobilus flower) oil, *clary (Salvia sclarea), *lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), *coltsfoot leaf (Tussilago farfara), *yarrow (Achillea millefolium) oil, *mallow (Malva sylvestris), *horsetail (Equistetum arvense) oil, *soybean protein (Glycine soja), cetyl alcohol (plant derived), tocopherol (vitamin E), trace minerals, citric acid (corn), sodium hydroxymethyglycinate, grapefruit seed (citrus derived).

Here’s the product in all its glory!

Here’s what Giovanni says:

  • Enriched with certified organic botanicals

  • Cruelty free
  • Restores strength, luster and nourishment to abused hair
  • Moisturizes and builds body
  • Detangles for easy comb-out, easy styling
To create condition and style, you need to go direct to the source.  Direct leave-in Conditioner goes directly into each hair to provide both.  This leave-in treatment repairs hair as you go through the day.  It also has the added benefit of plumping up each repaired hair so that it feels thicker.  More bodified.  This conditioner infuses each individual hair with proteins.  Pump it up.  Goes directly to style.
Real organic hair care.  Guaranteed when purchased at quality beauty retailers.

Here’s why I like it:
It’s super creamy, smells like a dream, it provides a great slip which makes it a good detangling conditioner. It works on all hair types. It doesn’t leave that white buildup in my hair. It makes my hair soft and thicker. It pairs well with other products such as EcoStyler Gel and Cantu Shea Butter Leave-in Conditioning Cream. It’s not tested on our beloved animals, and it’s certified organic!
Here’s how I use it:
I apply it on slightly damp hair and style my hair as usual. Right now I am wearing my hair in a protective style, pony tail. So what I do is coat all of my hair with the Direct Leave-In and then apply EcoStyler to smooth out my edges. I use a generous amount on the ends of my hair. If  I was rocking a fro/blow out… this product adds lots of body when heat is applied.

I’m in love with this product, it does wonders for my hair, I have heard nothing but great reviews from other naturals… Feed you Natural Hair! You should try it… and tell me what you think!
